Overview

Sub-Saharan Africa faces a severe shortage of healthcare professionals, especially in cardiology, with Kenya having only 40 cardiologists for 48 million people. E-learning offers a scalable, low-cost solution to bridge the knowledge gap in cardiovascular care across resource-constrained settings.

What We Did

  • Healthcare workers were invited to join the training through online platforms
  • A two-month virtual course on heart attack care was delivered weekly
  • Participants used a university-hosted e-learning platform for all materials and classes
  • Pre- and post-tests measured knowledge gains and confidence in care delivery

Overview

To tackle the growing burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) at the grassroots, Afya Mashinani Hub piloted the NCDs Mashinani Project in Ngoingwa. The initiative focused on improving access to affordable medication and enhancing follow-up care for patients living with diabetes and hypertension.

What We Did

  • Created an essential drug list based on local and national guidelines
  • Negotiated reduced drug prices by pooling patient numbers
  • Voluntarily enrolled 20 adult patients (11 women, 9 men; average age 58) for free weekly consultations
  • 80% of patients had both diabetes and hypertension

Key Findings

Addressing economic factors is key in reducing cost related medication non-adherence.

What's Next

Phase 2 will focus on integrating mobile health (mHealth) technology to improve patient follow-up, increase vitals monitoring frequency, and enhance long-term care outcomes.
